Assistant Director of Safety and Security


Trinity School of Durham and Chapel Hill seeks a full-time Assistant Director of Safety and Security. 
The Assistant Director of Safety and Security will oversee and direct the daily operations of Trinity School’s safety and security program. This role ensures the physical and operational safety of students, staff, and visitors through personnel supervision, system management, and emergency preparedness. The Security Manager will foster a secure, welcoming environment in service to the school community.
This role requires strong independent decision-making authority and consistent application of leadership skills to implement safety strategies while maintaining compliance with federal, state, and local regulations.
Responsibilities
The responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Leadership and Management

  • Directly supervises security personnel and contractors, including hiring, scheduling, training, and evaluating staff performance.
  • Leads the implementation and daily operation of security programs, policies, and procedures.
  • Makes independent decisions regarding staff assignments, operational adjustments, and incident responses.
  • Provides leadership in the absence of the Director of Safety & Security.

Operational Oversight

  • Oversees daily security staffing and schedules for comprehensive security presence throughout the work day, safety, and security systems, including access control, alarm monitoring, and surveillance technology, ensuring functionality and effectiveness.
  • Monitors and responds to all security incidents, alarms, and emergencies with swift, decisive action.
  • Conducts risk assessments and collaborates with senior leadership to address identified safety concerns.
  • Maintains compliance with state, federal, and local safety laws and regulations.

Emergency Preparedness

  • Develops and leads safety drills, emergency training, and response protocols for students, staff, and security personnel.
  • Assists in crisis management efforts, acting as a key team member during emergencies.
  • Builds and maintains strong relationships with local law enforcement, emergency responders, and regulatory agencies.

Collaboration and Reporting

  • Works closely with Facilities, Athletics, Technology, and other departments to ensure security measures are integrated into all aspects of school life.
  • Prepares and presents incident reports, assessments, and recommendations to the Director of Safety & Security.

Other Duties

  • Provides security presence during high-traffic times, events, and extracurricular activities.
  • Assists with budget preparation and operational planning.
  • Supports the overall safety mission of Trinity School through consistent leadership and operational excellence.
Qualifications

   Required

  • A professed Christian faith, demonstrated through an active relationship with Christ and alignment with the mission of Trinity School.
  • Law enforcement, military, or security leadership experience (minimum of 5 years).
  • Demonstrated ability to manage personnel and make independent decisions related to safety and operations.
  • Exceptional leadership, problem-solving, and decision-making abilities.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with a focus on fostering trust and collaboration.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and ability to learn supporting platforms and systems.

    Preferred
  • Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice, Security Management, Public Safety, or a related field.
  • Willingness to pursue further education or certifications in safety leadership, emergency management, or crisis response.
  • Certifications in CPR, AED, Stop the Bleed, or Active Threat Response.
Physical Requirements for Employment

Candidates in the Safety and Security Department must meet the following physical standards to ensure they can perform duties effectively and safely:

Mobility and Stamina

  • Ability to run short to moderate distances (e.g., pursuing an individual or reaching an emergency location quickly).
  • Ability to walk, stand, and patrol continuously for extended periods (up to 8–10 hours).
  • Capacity to climb stairs, navigate uneven terrain, and access various building areas rapidly.

Strength and Endurance

  • Ability to lift and carry up to 75 pounds (e.g., assisting individuals, moving barricades, or carrying equipment).
  • Ability to move or drag 150 to 200 lbs
  • Physical strength to subdue and detain individuals if necessary, while following school policies.
  • Endurance to perform in high-pressure scenarios such as physical altercations or emergencies.

Flexibility and Agility

  • Ability to kneel, crouch, crawl, and lie prone as needed during tactical or emergency scenarios.
  • Quick reflexes and coordination for de-escalating physical threats or operating in fast-paced environments.

Vision and Hearing

  • Correctable vision of at least 20/30 in each eye (binocular vision) and peripheral vision sufficient for situational awareness.
  • Color vision adequate to identify objects and signals such as emergency lights, uniforms, or hazards.
  • Hearing ability to detect and interpret verbal communication, alarms, and environmental sounds.

Hand-Eye Coordination and Dexterity

  • Ability to handle and operate security equipment, radios, and other tools accurately.
  • Fine motor skills for writing reports, operating electronic devices, and managing access controls.

Emergency Readiness

  • Capacity to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) or use an automated external defibrillator (AED) in high-stress situations.
  • Ability to respond effectively to active threats, including tactical positioning and evacuation assistance.

Environmental Tolerance

  • Willingness to work outdoors in all weather conditions, including extreme heat, cold, and rain.
  • Comfort with exposure to challenging environments, including loud noises, crowds, and confined spaces.

Terms of Employment
  • Full-time, exempt position.
  • Primary on-campus presence is required with occasional flexibility based on operational needs.
  • Must be available for evening, weekend, or emergency hours as needed.
  • Annual salary and benefits commensurate with experience and qualifications.
  • Reports to the Director of Safety & Security.
